BEYOND READ-THE-BOOK, WATCH-THE-MOVIE:

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching Film

Throughout 2004 and 2005, The Film Foundation presented a professional development workshop for teachers at national education conferences, including the National Council for Teachers of English and the National Middle School Association. The 90-minute interactive workshop included a variety of screening activities, in addition to an in-depth discussion about The Story of Movies interdisciplinary approach to film study in the classroom.

This presentation is from the workshop and identifies some of the key concepts and teaching strategies presented during the professional development program.

The workshop goals are:

• to acquaint educators with The Story of Movies interdisciplinary design and pilot site testing results
• to introduce and explain The Story of Movies curriculum components
• to view video segments and complete screening activities relative to student lessons
